What is the regulation and duty rate for importing a used car into Thailand ?

Regulation and duty rate for importing a personal vehicle (either Permanent or Temporary) into Thailand .
A temporary import of personal vehicles for a short visit e.g. a motor vehicle, motorcycle, yacht, sports boat, or fishing vessel, etc. into Thailand by owners shall be grant tax/duty relief provided that they are to be re-exported within 1-2 months but not exceeding six months. Any persons intending to temporarily import personal vehicles e.g. a motor vehicle, motorcycle, yacht, sports boat, or fishing vessel, etc. have to closely observe the following Customs regulations and conditions:

New vehicles of all types not yet registered abroad are allowed to be imported without applying for an import permit from the Ministry of Commerce. However, for the vehicles with the weight less than 3500 Kgs., an importer needs to obtain an import permit from the Industrial Standard Institute, telephone number 02-2023331.

Used/secondhand vehicles need to obtain an import permit from the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce, telephone 02-5474804. For the vehicles with the weight less than 3500 Kgs., an importer needs to obtain an import permit from the Industrial Standard Institute as well.

How much money can I bring with me into Thailand?

For Thai currency, the amount of Baht 50,000 or more must be reported on departure to Customs, except those traveling to Lao PDR., Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Vietnam are allowed to take out Thai currency not exceeding 500,000 Baht.

For Foreign currency, any person who brings or takes and aggregate amount of foreign currency exceeding USD 20,000 or its equivalent out of or into the Kingdom of Thailand shall declare such amount of foreign currency to Customs. Failure to declare or make false declaration is a criminal offence.

What is the requirement to use Thai flag vessels for imports goods from abroad ?

Any person who orders or imports goods from abroad which are required by the Notification of the Ministry of Transportation
No. 3 issued under the Mercantile Marine Promotion Act, B.E. 2521 to be carried by Thai vessels shall notify the Marine Department of such order or importation of goods prior to the date of loading goods on Thai vessels.

Can I bring gold into Thailand ?

The Ministry of Finance permits the import and export of gold without authorization. Residents may hold and trade domestically gold jewelry, gold coins, and gold bullion. Foreign tourists are also freely allowed to take out gold ornaments.

  • The passenger is required to declare such as dutiable items, prohibited/restricted goods, etc. or If you are unsure which exit to use, go to the "Goods to Declare" exit (Red Channel).
  • An importer is also subject to VAT (7%) in Thailand no matter whether one is a registered person or not. VAT (7%) will be collected by the Customs Department at the time goods are imported.
